In 1959, upon registering at Henry Ford College1, I felt someone looking at me from across the gymnasium. It was my future husband, Don. Little did we know it was in that moment that we were signing up for a lifetime together, which began December 10, 1961, when we were married at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church.

In 1984, Don’s cardiologist referred him to Dr. Simpfendorfer2 at Cleveland Clinic. It was the start of not only a 30-year doctor-patient relationship, but a true friendship. Through the years, Don came to Cleveland Clinic for a double bypass, a valve repair and hernia surgery. Cleveland Clinic was the only institution where we had full trust and confidence.

There was no man like Don. He brought laughter to everyone he came across, doctors included, and had an unforgettable laugh. He was a toolmaker by trade, owning three tool businesses over the course of his lifetime, but a giver at heart. He gave his time, energy, dedication and passion to anyone in need, especially the Armenian community. His legacy is far beyond that of an ordinary individual.

Don helped a lot of people, and Cleveland Clinic helped us. Words cannot express how grateful we were at the time, and will forever be, for the kind, compassionate care and thoughtful guidance from every doctor, nurse and caregiver present. We’re proud to be a part of the Cleveland Clinic family.
