Our Playlist
By Beth and Jim Holladay
Beth and Jim Holladay have been married 45 years. Before they retired, she was a teacher and he worked on production crews for touring performers. Music has always been a mainstay in their lives, especially now that Beth has Alzheimer’s disease and participates in music therapy through Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. Beth and Jim put together this playlist of some of their favorite songs, with commentary:
“Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver: Both of us can relate to this one. Neither of us lived in a big city until we were older.
“Both Sides, Now” by Joni Mitchell: The winning combination of Joni Mitchell’s lyrics and music has made her one of Beth’s favorites since the 1960s.
“One Fine Day” by Carole King: Another Beth pick, for its infectious beat.
“The Weight” by the Band: Shortly after we were married in 1976, we had passes to see the Band in New York City on their last tour.
“Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel: We don’t really have one particular song that’s “our song,” but this one seems to fit us. Jim toured with Billy Joel on and off. His music comes from the heart.
“Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison: Van Morrison has such a great voice — and this feel-good song is one of his best.
“On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson: Jim used to be on the road a lot for work, so we know where Willie Nelson is coming from here. It’s about good times, being with friends and doing what you love.
“I Can See Clearly Now” by Jimmy Cliff: The message is so positive: Whatever was in your way is now out of your way.
“Imagine” by John Lennon: It’s a hopeful song about making the world a better place. Jim worked the memorial service for John Lennon in Central Park in 1980.
“Stand by Me” by Ben E. King: An oldie but goodie that has taken on new meaning since the music therapy group started singing it. We all need someone to stand by us.
