Some Things That I Like
By Khaled Mahamid
Here are some things that I like:
Scary animals.
Crustaceans — crabs, crayfish and lobsters.
Tarantulas and scorpions.
Plastic animal toys.
I love seafood.
I would love to see real hermit crabs — or, in the aquarium, lobsters.
I love to see lobsters and crayfish and tarantulas race each other.
I love to see hermit crabs and scorpions race, and which one finishes his food first.
I’m positive.
I’m caring.
Thank you!
Khaled Mahamid — seen here with Kareem Abu-Elmagd, MD, PhD — made this list for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Born with Martinez-Frias syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, Khaled received three multivisceral organ transplants at Cleveland Clinic. He dreamed of someday going to college, performing transplant surgeries on hermit crabs and having an office “with bugs in jars.” Sales of a T-shirt featuring original drawings created in art therapy by Khaled, who died this year at the age of 11, have raised $7,500 for Cleveland Clinic Children’s.
