The Best Possible Outcome

By Jessica Claughton

In 2008, I was a freshman in college when I had a horrific accident that has left me blind in one eye.

I was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. When I got to the ER, I couldn’t see anything. I thought I was completely blind. I later learned that because your eyes work as a pair, the trauma to my right eye had caused me to become temporarily blind in both eyes.

My dad was with me. I couldn’t see what was happening, but I remember hearing him fight to get me transferred to Cleveland Clinic. We knew they would be able to help me. If I wanted any chance of keeping my eye, we’d need the experts — and they were at Cleveland Clinic.

The amazing team at Cole Eye Institute rushed me into an emergency surgery. By the sheer grace of God, Dr. Langston1 was on call that night. Because of his expertise, he was able to save my eye.

I later had two more surgeries with Dr. Sears2, who corrected my detached retina. His bedside manner is incredible, and I actually enjoy my appointments. He’s always honest and optimistic.

My life would be dramatically different if it weren’t for the specialized care that I’ve received at Cleveland Clinic. While I’ll likely never regain sight in my right eye, no matter what happens, I know that I’ll have the best possible outcome.
