THE 1990s
Research Recruiter
Christine Moravec, PhD, has studied heart failure for more than three decades. Now she’s passing on her passion for science to a new generation. Dr. Moravec, Director of the Research Education and Training Center at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, is leading a new initiative in partnership with Cleveland State University — with funding from the National Institutes of Health — to recruit underrepresented minority students for biomedical research programs. Established with a $16 million gift from philanthropists Al and Norma Lerner, the Lerner Research Institute opened in 1999. It remains one of the leading research institutes in the nation, home to 1,500 scientists and support personnel working in 190 laboratories across 10 departments.
