The peeled shell of a hard-boiled egg. A half-eaten banana. The remnants of breakfast.
It takes but a moment for Annette Connell to swoop in, clear the tray and wipe down the bedside table. Like it says on her badge: “Our Goal: Clean at All Times.” In the process, she effortlessly strikes up a conversation with the gentleman seated on the edge of his bed in a cardiothoracic stepdown unit.
“I’m a people person,” says Annette, a lead on the Environmental Services team. “I enjoy my job.”
It shows. The mask covering her face doesn’t obscure her expressive eyes. They speak volumes, radiating empathy and compassion.
A clock on the wall marks the passage of time. The whiteboard notes the day of the week (Thursday) and the date (October 10). A fresh round of ginger ale flows as freely as the banter between patient and caregiver.
“Sometimes patients don’t have nobody here with them,” Annette says. “When they just want someone to talk to, I’m here for them.”
