Outside, Hurricane Milton has rampaged across Florida with destructive fury. Inside, caregivers put lives back together, one patient at a time. 

In a long hospital corridor, the transplant team is on rounds. Syed Husain, MD, immerses himself in patient charts. “Every time we see a new patient, I read their chart,” the nephrology fellow says. “It helps me understand their history and prepares me to answer their questions.” 

In just over a decade, Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital has performed more than 500 liver transplants and 300 heart transplants, pioneering new techniques and new technologies along the way. 

Beside Dr. Husain are two nurse practitioners, Rolenda Leon, APRN, and Nicole Sylvain, APRN, as well as members of the surgical team. “We’re an interdisciplinary team with a lot of moving parts,” Rolenda says. “All of us come together to provide the appropriate care before the patient goes home.” 

Their next stop? The room of a kidney transplant recipient. Lab results are scrutinized. The path to recovery is discussed. A care plan takes shape. 

The healers in the hallway keep moving, bringing hope wherever they can.
