The 1980s

Joseph Hahn, MD, leads the development of brain mapping, which enables surgeons to pinpoint seizure sites in epilepsy patients.

The Meyer Center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging — the first freestanding building designed to house MRI machines — is completed. Funded with a gift from former Cleveland Clinic Foundation President E. Tom Meyer, the facility is constructed without steel nails or other materials containing iron.

Cleveland Clinic performs its first liver transplant.

Heart transplant program established.

A major expansion is completed. It includes a new outpatient building (pictured) designed by Cesar Pelli, new hospital facilities and a two-block-long skyway linking the enlarged campus.

Bernadine Healy, MD, becomes the first woman to lead a Cleveland Clinic division: the Division of Research.

Cleveland Clinic performs its first kidney/pancreas transplant. 

Declan Walsh, MD, establishes the Palliative Care Program.

Cleveland Clinic Florida opens in Fort Lauderdale — the first facility outside Ohio.

Floyd Loop, MD, is appointed CEO and Chairman of the Board of Governors. He serves until 2004.
