The Sherwin Building (Phase 1 of the Research and Education Institute) opens, funded by a $30M+ campaign led by Bernadine Healy, MD, Chair of the Research Institute, and Art Modell, President of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Patrick McCarthy, MD, performs Ohio’s first heart-double lung transplant.

To treat atrial fibrillation, Delos “Toby” Cosgrove, MD, performs the world’s  first combination mitral valve repair and maze procedure in a single operation.

Cleveland Clinic opens the first of what by 2021 will be a total of 18 family health centers in Northeast Ohio communities.

Gene Barnett, MD, and Donald Kormos, PhD, develop a neurowand for guiding surgeons to brain tumors.

The Securing the 21st Century capital campaign is launched. Led by Chairman F. Joseph Callahan (pictured), it raises $264 million for construction of the Cole Eye Institute, the Lerner Research Institute and the original Taussig Cancer Center.

Marymount Hospital is the first regional hospital to join the Cleveland Clinic health system. Other hospitals soon follow.

U.S. News & World Report names Cleveland Clinic No. 1 in the nation for heart care for the first time, an honor retained every year since then.

Marshall Strome, MD, performs the world’s first laryngeal transplant.
