Files occupy miles of shelves in the basement of the Crile Building, where millions of paper medical records have been stored since the 1980s. A miniature railroad of sorts carried the records in bins from the subterranean safe haven to all parts of the facility. In 1996, C. Martin Harris, MD (right), was named Cleveland Clinic’s first Chief Information Officer, ushering in a transition from paper to electronic medical records.
